Omni Trio’s Journey Through Moving Shadow

Omni Trio has been Moving Shadow’s top selling artist for over 30 years. Back when Moving Shadow started, Omni Trio (Rob Haigh) also used to own a record shop! He’s a natural at recommending perfect lists of top picks and this playlist of his essential and seminal Moving Shadow classics is no exception.

I enjoyed putting this together - so many quality tunes, great to revisit them.

The playlist shines a light on a few tunes and artists that might normally get overlooked. There’s a bit of old-skool, some tracks from the jazzy/ambient era, and a couple of tougher tracks too.

Noisia: Their Essential Moving Shadow Selection

Having had an absolutely stellar career, Noisia provide us here with an equally stellar Moving Shadow playlist that highlights the role Moving Shadow played in their musical development. Rather than over shadow the artist (so to speak) and have us bleat on about the label all the time though, we’ll let Nik from Noisia tell the story …

Moving Shadow was one of the first D&B labels we were exposed to. Their CD sampler series mixed by Timecode would find its way into our hands through the local record store and the whole world within it world blew us away. The music, the graphics, the titles and themes… everything. This was around ‘98. From then on we listened to everything Moving Shadow put out and found their music in many games we played (GTA, Rollcage, TOCA Touring Car Championship…).

After years of making tracks and releasing them, a dream came true; our own release on Moving Shadow in the form of the Block Control EP (which most Noisia fans also consider a defining moment). We were, and still are, honoured to be a part of the amazing history and unique track record of this label.

Our selection here reflects our own memories and favourites from the 98-2006 era. So many mind-blowing records. Thank you so much, Moving Shadow.

Calyx has a definite place in any Drum & Bass “Hall of Fame” and also happens to have been one of the most prolific artists on Moving Shadow! This playlist is an incredible selection and cements Calyx as one of the scene’s most knowledgable and intelligent ambassadors. Take it away …

Moving Shadow changed my life in so many ways - firstly as an iconic and seminal label that shaped my love of Jungle / Drum & Bass, but far more importantly it was the launching pad for my artist career that still continues over 25 years later.

This playlist is my nostalgic tribute to the label that gave me immeasurable support, guidance and inspiration. It features a mix of artists and tracks that were hugely influential for me, as well as a spread of my own tracks that reflect my evolution as a producer during my cherished years on the label.

Hyper-On Experience: Their Essential Moving Shadow Selection

This playlist by Alex from Hyper-On Experience pays homage to the Moving Shadow tracks that influenced his early career. It also includes certain classics that were the result of those influences.

F**king Voodoo Magic, Man …

The Rave scene is set in stone and the tracks in this playlist form part of the foundations. At that time, each weekend brought new sounds and fresh ideas hurtling over massive sound systems in crowded fields and warehouses. This selection is a chronicle journey through Moving Shadow’s involvement, and direction, of the UK’s most important music scene since Punk. I have a strong emotional attachment to those times and these tracks encapsulate the joy I felt discovering the music.

Alex Banks | Hyper-On Experience

2 Bad Mice … and alter ego Kaotic Chemistry

Focusing on the output of one group of three people, this playlist is predominantly a “best of” 2 Bad Mice and their alter ego Kaotic Chemistry (plus some other tracks that have close ‘family ties’). We go way back to the very early days of Moving Shadow here, but there’s nothing happy about this Hardcore!

It’s stone cold classics all the way.

This playlist is a “just so you know” nod to the tracks that, while not making their way into modern Drum & Bass selections, were responsible for so much. There’s some pretty early and limited production techniques here, but they still hold up in their own right, even after all these years. Pretty proud of that!

Did you know, “Waremouse” (which appears in this playlist) was the track responsible for getting Goldie into a studio for the first time after he’d heard it out! What if THAT had never happened, eh?

Blame’s ‘Shadow’ Classics

A true original Moving Shadow artist, Blame was there from the label’s earliest years. His selection here is testament to the significance of those times too; plenty for the old-skool!

Still a regular contributor to the scene, the ground breaking “Music Takes You” was where it all started for Blame - a verified Moving Shadow Classic indeed!

It’s a real honour to be part of the Moving Shadow story. ‘Music Takes You’ was my first record, so it will always have a special place in my heart. Here are some of the early ‘Shadow’ tracks that I fell in love with.

Respawn put together a Spotify playlist of every track in the Moving Shadow catalogue, in chronological release order, and within a few hours of us going live. Anyone that’s built larger playlists will know just what a feat that is! We suggest you take a look at this playlist even if you don’t have ‘over 24 hrs’ (as Spotify quaintly list it) to listen through it.
